Observations and inferences about our
data:
-There was a lot of litter: 1,756
pieces in an eighth of a mile strip of land! -There was at least 30 pieces of trash
of each material type. -Paper has the most, followed closely
by plastic, followed by cardboard. -Styrofoam is the least material of
the litter we collected. |
-The vast majority of the litter
clearly came from fast food containers or from the Walmart (identifying
labels on the litter). -The data reflects what we use. We use a lot of plastic, so there’s a lot
of plastic litter. We don’t use as
much Styrofoam, so there isn’t as much of that kind of litter. -There was a whole box of napkins,
which increased the paper count. |
This is so informative! Thank you for all your hard work! I'm interested to know how this problem will be mitigated in the future!
ReplyDeleteThank you. If you look at the top of the blog home page, you can navigate to a separate page called, "Our Solutions." Some of the ideas have been started, while others are still in the brainstorming stage. Some are more manageable (potentially working with business to improve trash can use and fencing and keeping litter cleaned up), while others will perhaps be beyond the scope of what we can do (reducing single-use plastics in grocery stores). We hope this is an on-going project, so stay tuned!
